Foreign Language Learning

A foreign language is a language not spoken by the natives of a certain place. It is also a language not spoken in the native country of the person referred to, for example - A German speaker living in China can say that Chinese is a foreign language to him or her.

Advantages and More Advantages: of learning a foreign language

Speaking a second language could increase an average worker's salary by .3 times to the actual pay a year. Further results showed that nine out of 10 companies thought their businesses could benefit from better language skills. Studies show that a person that is bilingual or multilingual can make a greater wages than a computer programmer or engineer because they can use their abilities in foreign language to obtain success in a wide range of career paths. Also due to the increase of international population, a multilingual person can easily communicate and translate to perspective viewers.

Also in 2004, a study by University College London (UCL) examined the brains of 105 people who could speak more than one language. The study found that people who learned a second language when younger had denser grey matter than those who learned one later. Grey matter is the part of the brain where information is processed.

French

French is an official language of France and is the most romantic language spoken as a first language by about 140 million people worldwide. Around 200 million people speak French as a second language and an additional 220 million people speak French as an acquired language. French speaking communities are present in 57 countries and territories and it is an official language in around 30 countries like Canada, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland etc.

French has de jure (concerning law) official status in Pondicherry along with the regional languages Tamil and Telugu. French is commonly taught as a third language in secondary schools in most cities of Maharashtra, West Bengal & few other states. Certain high-profile schools affiliated with CBSE in the NCR offer French as an option as early as grade 4.

Nevertheless French is taught throughout India as an optional foreign language and is very popular language among students.

Spanish

Spanish is an official language of Spain, the country after which it is named and from which it originated

Spanish is spoken in 20 different countries worldwide. It is also spoken by small communities in other European countries, such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany etc. It is the second most natively spoken language in the world, after Mandarin Chinese. Mexico contains the largest population of Spanish speakers. Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

Spanish is the second most used language in international communication, and an official language of the UN and its organizations. Globalization has further fueled the need for Spanish speaking individuals.

Spanish is the world's third most spoken language; almost 500 million people worldwide speak Spanish! The whole of Latin America (apart from Brazil) and Spain speak Spanish.

According to a survey carried out by Modern Languages Association, USA, interest in language study has been increasing steadily in the United States. Further, in United States alone more than 52.2% of all language enrollments have been for Spanish.

Portuguese

Portuguese is spoken in Brazil (2.5 times the size of India!!), Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, Macau and Goa. Brazil and India have entered into many business agreements, so work is bound to increase many folds.

With over 260 million speakers, is the fifth most spoken language in the world, the most widely spoken in the southern hemisphere, the third most spoken in the western world and is one of the Latin alphabet languages. Like other languages, Portuguese has a historical evolution, being influenced by many languages and dialects, until you reach the stage known today.

Today it is one of the world's major languages, ranked seventh according to number of native speakers (between 205 and 230 million). It is the language of about half of South America's population, even though Brazil is the only Portuguese-speaking nation in the Americas. It is an official language in nine countries (see the table on the right), also being co-official with Cantonese Chinese in Macau and Tetum in East Timor. There are sizeable communities of Portuguese speakers in various regions of North America, notably in the United States (New Jersey, New England, California and south Florida) and in Ontario, Canada (especially Toronto).

Nevertheless, the grammar, structure and vocabulary of the Portuguese and Spanish languages are so similar that phonetic differences do not impede intelligibility between them any significant way. Portuguese is also the fourth most learned language in the world, since at least 30 million students study this language. The obligatory learning of Portuguese is observed in Uruguay, Argentina, Venezuela, Zambia, Congo, Senegal, Namibia, Swaziland, Côte d'Ivoire, and South Africa.
